Hemp, as a type of cannabis, has been refined into fibres, fabrics and other products for centuries, but because commercial varieties are the same species as marijuana and contain very low levels of THC (the psychoactive phytocannabinoid 9-tetrahydrocannabinol), its production in the west has been greatly limited in recent years.
