Military-needs pushing emerging technologies to the limit

Foster-Miller Inc and Herbst Lezar Bell, both of Waltham, Massachusetts, USA, won the 2003 International Achievement Award of Excellence from the Industrial Fabrics Association International in the Safety & Protective category of its annual competition to find the most innovative ideas in technical and industrial textiles (see also, Technical Textiles International, July/August 2004, page 20). Their Phase I design for the Objective Force Warrior (OFW) exploits a number of technologies with potential not just for the military, but also for a variety of safety and protection applications, including those for the emergency services.
