Attracting students to technical textiles-a vital challenge
In the UK, it is widely recognized that the number of school pupils studying mathematics, chemistry and physics by choice has reached dangerously low levels. The Royal Society stated in a media release (17 December 2003) that the decline in the number of entries for the Advanced-level (A-level, generally taken at about age 18) examination between 1991 and 2003 was 25% in mathematics, 30% in physics and 19% in chemistry. Moreover, despite recent signs of some recovery in the numbers on teacher training courses, there is still too small a supply of staff qualified to teach these subjects.
