German researchers claim to have developed in-vitro tests that can reliably predict mechanically triggered skin irritation such as that caused by projecting fibres. The scientists from the Hohenstein Institutes, led by Dirk Hofer, are combining these cost-effective methods with known wear tests on volunteers to study the mechanical, biological and chemical causes of skin irritation as part of a project, Tests to eliminate mechanically triggered skin irritation by textile fabrics, funded by the Research Association of the German Textile Industry, the Federal Ministry for Economy and Technology (BMWi) and the Association of Industrial Research Associations.
