A synthetic fibre with a high degree of flame resistance has been developed by Kaneka Corp of Osaka, Japan, specifically designed for use in furniture such as bedding and chairs. Agents added to the fibre increase its flame resistance and it also carbonizes readily to further prevent the spread of fire, according to European Patent EP 1 798 318.
