Opening the plenary session of Medtex07, Professor Martin King of the College of Textiles, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, described a new approach to designing filters for the inferior vena cava (the vein below the heart returning blood from the abdomen and lower limbs) made from textile structures. These devices are used to prevent pulmonary embolism.
