Nonwoven wipes that can be used to mop or absorb relatively small amounts of liquid but then disperse when introduced to larger amounts of water, such as when the item is flushed down a toilet, are the subject of European Patent EP 1 743 969. Patent applicant, Air Products Polymers LP of Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA, says the dry nonwoven webs contain a trigger (such boric acid, boric acid salts or sodium sulphate) that activates the dispersal.
