Massive amounts of new and used carpet are disposed of by incineration or simply as landfill, according to Mohawk Brands Inc, a situation that has prompted the company from Wilmington, Delaware, USA, to apply for an International Patent (WO 2004/078473) covering a technique that converts the waste into a raw material to be used as a backing filler for new floorcoverings.
