American researchers are using nanotechnology to develop layers of so-called "smart textiles" that will not only keep first responders and the military safe without sacrificing comfort or ease of use, but may also have other uses, including garments coated with medicinal drugs, antibacterial fabrics and protective clothing, as well as hygiene applications.
