A US-based inventor claims to have used elastomeric materials to develop a device for protecting fingers. Dennis J. Miller says his thimble is sufficiently strong and hard that it prevents penetration by a needle, but is flexible enough to accommodate large variations in shape and remain comfortable to wear. Formed to accommodate the shape of a finger, friction holds the thimble in place, according to US Patent 6 726 068.
