A bloodhound has around half a square metre of mucose membrane, giving it the ability to detect a scent from as little as one or two cells. By comparison, the mucose membrane of a human is little more than the size of a postage stamp. At the recent Nonwovens Network UK conference held in Bradford, West Yorkshire, Tim Gibson of Scensive Technologies introduced the Bloodhound E-Nose range of instruments for the detection of the mixtures of volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) that produce smells and odours in fabrics.
