    Smart implant lowers risk in heart operations

    Boston-based NMT Medical has received pre-market approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allowing it to commercially market its STARFlex cardiac septal repair implant. This can be placed in the heart to close a ventricular septal defect (VSD) using a catheter during a minimally invasive procedure – avoiding the need for open-heart surgery.
