In the next stage of its Lumalive development, Philips aims to unveil a "truly electronic textile" product within two years, and while there are still obstacles to be overcome, believes they are not insurmountable. The ultimate aim is apparent - a textile market which is not just based on the sale of a garment, but on software services and the possibility of repeat downloads of images for it. The nearest phenomenon this can be compared to is the market for mobile phone ringtones - a huge industry over the past decade - and a lucrative add-on once the sale of the technology has been made. Or clothing as the basic hardware, and its electronic possibilities as the software element. But it's really more than that.
